Nadje Al-Ali: Women and War in the Middle East

Half Iraqi, half German, Nadje Al-Ali learned Arabic as a scholar in Cairo before obtaining a doctorate at the University of London, where she is currently a professor of Gender Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies. She was a founder of Act Together: Women's Action for Iraq, and is a member of Women in Black. She is the author of numerous books about the tension between feminism and cultural sovereignty in the Middle East. Her current book, with co-author Nicola Pratt, examines the impact of occupation on women in Iraq and Palestine. Here, she addresses an audience at san Diego State University, California.
